Skoda Kamiq: Small SUV big and smart

Skoda gets again SUV offspring – after Kodiaq and Karoq now drives the Kamiq. As a small, but actually quite adult SUV. Only the front looks pretty playful.

Similar to the brand siblings VW and Seat also the subsidiary Skoda builds their SUV offer more and more. As the youngest and smallest member of the family, the Kamiq will be added to the model range from late summer, adding another idiosyncratic nomenclature of the Czechs at the Hochsitzers, adding “q” at the end of the name.

The 4.24 meter long actually not so small Kamiq is based on the modular cross-construction kit of the A0 group of the VW Group. That means: unlike the similar sized T-Roc (A1 group), there will be no four-wheel drive for the Skoda. But a lot of assistance systems and networking and a base price, which should be below 20,000 euros.

Always on board is then about a front radar, with the help of the Czech pedestrians detects and optionally slows down autonomously; the lane departure warning system is also part of the standard repertoire. If you dig deeper into the equipment box (and into the wallet), you get features like the active cruise control, which works up to 210 km / h.

In addition, the engineers are installing additional radar sensors that warn of vehicles that are either in the process of overtaking or in blind spots. Rearward parking out of confusing gaps is also accompanied by acoustic signals. And if a collision can not be avoided, the machine tightens the straps and closes the windows if necessary. The neatly processed interior is full of infotainment matching the assistant armada – a large, freestanding monitor plus instrument cluster made of TFT surface express the height of time.

Last but not least, the fact that the new Skoda Kamiq is networked is demonstrated by a function that enables the front-wheel drive to be remotely disconnected via a web portal or to check whether the windows are closed. Various driving data such as previously reached speeds or the tank level can also be retrieved remotely.

Classically under the hood In

contrast, the engine chapter then seems only classic. Under the hood diesel and Otto engines work between 95 hp and 150 hp. Turbocharging and direct injection are set, cylinder deactivation must increase the efficiency of the powerful gasoline engine. And instead of electromotive assistance, the Kamiq will provide a natural gas variant for CO2 and NOx reduction. Manual transmissions with five or six gears respectively automatic (seven-speed dual clutch) transmit the different torques. If you want, get a chassis with electronic damper control, where there are no variable settings, but only two static hardness levels. Basically, a lowering of one centimeter is associated with the electronic control “Sport Chassis Control”.

You do not have to be a design professional to realize that the new Kamiq is a close relative of the equally new Skoda Scala – but there is a bit of variation: the front with the crystal-optic daytime running lights differs significantly from the six centimeters flatter Brother and looks a bit futuristic – and surprisingly polattising for a Skoda.

And Skoda would not Skoda, if the Kamiq in addition to his pronounced lifestyle impact also not offered practical practical skills. First, the space is okay – even the rear revealed after a short seat sample sufficient leg and headroom, so you can imagine a longer distance here well. Secondly, the luggage compartment volume is almost 1400 liters when the rear seats are folded. Not bad for a small car. And third, even the famous “Simply Clever” solutions are not lacking. In addition to ice scraper, umbrella and flashlight, there is now also an integrated door edge protection for the first time. Its biggest advantage: unlike the other parts, it can not be overslept over time.
