Volvo’s sub-brand for electric cars aims to launch a purely electric mid-range model by the end of 2019. At reasonable prices and in significant quantities. Now Polestar has published a first picture and more data.
The Polestar 2 will be the first of a total of five Volvo and Polestar electric vehicles to be launched between 2019 and 2021, and the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) of the entire Volvo Car Group.
Range of a good 482 kilometers
While the performance-oriented Coupé Polestar 1 as a plug-in hybrid still has a powerful four-cylinder turbo on board and it can with its 34 kWh battery with a maximum of 150 kilometers electric range, the Polestar 2 without burners should be at least twice as far come, should make the middle-class model but, among others, Tesla’s Model 3 competition.
Development is still ongoing, but production is scheduled to start in late 2019 – with a higher circulation than the Polestar 1 (500 units per year). The factory in Chengdu , which Volvo , which has been part of the Chinese Geely since 2010 , is set to build, should be good for at least a five-figure production capacity. It should be 2020 by the market launch.
Then, unlike Polestar 1, carbon will not be an issue. For the target price range that is too expensive and too expensive for the larger quantities. Presumably, however, Polestar will also fall back on the “2” on a Volvo floor group. Unlike the Polestar 1, it will be the smaller new CMA platform (Compact Modular Architecture) on which the XC40 and from 2018 also the S40 / V40 build.
Volvo’s e-cars are to receive a scalable battery pack with a capacity of up to 100 kWh, which could also benefit the Polestar 2. The range of the Polestar 2 will be about 482 kilometers, according to the company’s announcement about 300 miles. Polestar cites about 405 hp as output, with the final technical data to be published in the near future.
On the first teaser image, only the rear end of the Polestar 2 can be seen. The rear window protrudes far back, the fenders are issued strong. An LED band connects the rear lights. The Polestar 2 is designed as a four-door hatchback and is based on the concept study Volvo 40.2.
Buy or subscribe?
Presumably, Polestar will also sell its second model primarily as in the case of the Polestar 1 via a subscription: An all-inclusive package with scalable flatrate – maintenance, all inclusive service, additional services such as pick-up and delivery service or temporarily used accessories for Dazubuchen via Volvo on demand. Customers can buy the Polestar 2 as well. The price? Is not yet clear.
According to Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath no automaker can escape these new business models . Ingenlath is also convinced that cars emitting exhaust fumes will soon evoke similar self-evident rejection, such as smoking in restaurants.
About autonomous driving cars has Ingenlath not spoken in the Polestar presentation in October 2017th But maybe only because he has presented there with the Polestar 1 a particularly active driving GT for the first time.
