Tina Fey on how to be funny

TINA Fey says her life lessons are proof that the most important accessory is a sense of humour.

There is a formula to it, says Fey in the video: “Comedy is truth, plus time, multiplied by monkeys, divided by one fart.”

In a video for The Edit, NET-A-PORTER’s digital magazine, Fey reveals her tips on how to be funny this holiday season, which include not relying on props (especially monkeys), avoiding “the enemy of funny” — Botox — and getting your timing right.

“My daughters [Alice, 10, and Penelope, four] will tell you that I’m exceedingly dull — the fourth funniest person in the family. My four-year-old is rivalling my husband [composer and producer Jeff Richmond] for first place at this point.

On Alec Baldwin:

“Alec Baldwin is insanely talented and to work with him for seven years [on Emmy Award-winning comedy 30 Rock] was an education.

On not having to explain herself:

“Steer clear of the internet and you’ll live forever. We did an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode and the internet was in a whirlwind, calling it ‘racist’, but my new goal is not to explain jokes. I feel like we put so much effort into writing and crafting everything, they need to speak for themselves. There’s a real culture of demanding apologies, and I’m opting out of that.”
