We invite you to raise your eyes to the sky in the night from Sunday to Monday since you can admire a beautiful eclipse of the Moon. It will take a little effort however since if the phenomenon will be very visible for the Americas, it will be necessary to go to bed late or get up early to look at Africa or Europe. It is only at sunset that we can enjoy it, but it’s worth it, since the next lunar eclipse observable in our regions will take place in 2022.
It was 6 months ago, the last lunar eclipse had spoiled us. Visible very easily, there was then in addition to the spectacle of Mars shining very bright next door.
This time, the phenomenon will be more complicated to observe if you are in Europe or in Africa since it is only at the end of the night, at the time of the setting of Moon, that the eclipse will be visible. It is indeed the turn of the Americans to enjoy, they will be entitled to it all night.
As a reminder, a lunar eclipse is when the sun, the earth and our satellite are aligned. The Moon is thus in the shadow of the Earth and then takes on this characteristic red color, because the light of the Sun is filtered by the atmosphere of our planet. This is where the nickname “Blood Moon” comes from, although it is completely misleading.
This phenomenon is not uncommon without being frequent. The next visible lunar eclipse in Europe and Africa will only take place in 2022, exactly on May 16th.
